Hi there! Thank you for your question. Allopurinol decreases uric acid in gout patients. It is part of Long Term Urate Lowering Therapy (ULT). Before taking allopurinol, let your doctor know if you have any of the following conditions liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, are pregnant or breastfeeding or are receiving chemotherapy drugs.

Regular checkups are need to test your blood for any reaction to the drug. Allopurinol can decrease the number of blood cells in your body that make blood clot and that help you fight infections, which can make it easier for you to bleed from an injury or get sick.

Some of the side effects that are rare bit might occur may include vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, headache, muscle pain, changes in sense or taste, fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling and red skin rash, any sign of skin rash, no matter how mild, nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, weight loss, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, pain or bleeding when urinating, urinating less frequently or not at all, joint pain or flu symptoms, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, or purple or red pinpoint spots under the skin and severe tingling, numbness, pain, or muscle weakness.

As for your question, depending on which painkiller you are using, but most of them don’t interact with allopurinol. These are the drugs that interact with allopurinol:
1. Azathioprine( immunosuppressant)
2. Chlorpropamide (diabetes medication)
3. Cyclosporine (immunosuppressant)
4. Mercaptopurine (anti-cancer drugs)
5. Antibiotics such as ampicillin or amoxicillin
6. Blood thinners such as warfarin
7. Diuretics (blood pressure drug)
8. Certain herbal medication
9. Certain recreational drug

Let you doctor know about all prescription, non-prescription, illegal, recreational, herbal, nutritional, or dietary drugs you are take (if any). You also should avoid drinking alcohol while taking allopurinol, as it may make your condition worse. Your doctor may advise you to follow a special diet to help treat your gout.
