My mom had contact with a coworker whose relative tested positive for covid19. What should we do?

Hello. So 2 days ago, my mom had contact with a coworker at work who attended a wedding with a relative who tested positive for covid19. She’s 56 years old, no health issue history however I am still worried for her and my dad who is 57 years old with a heart disease history. The coworker went for the screening test yesterday, should my mom go for one too? does this fall under contact with a patient and what are the risks for my mom?

Hello.

Thank you for your question. The category of close contact includes those who are in direct contact with a person who is tested positive for COVID-19. Hence, your mom has low risk of contracting COVID-19 given the fact that she was not a close contact of anyone tested positive. However, it is still advisable for her to monitor her health, as well as all of your family members. Follow these guidelines from the Centre of Disease Control (CDC):

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
