Fibroadenoma Surgery
I have a fibroadenoma which will be surgically removed soon. What should I prepare beforehand and how long should I rest afterwards. Is there any rules to follow after my surgery (diet and movement etc)?

Greetings. That is a very good question and is being highly appreciated. However, the following description regarding the query is a general description to your current condition. Click on this link (DoctorOnCall) to converse with our doctors for further personalised consultation.
Fibroadenomas are benign breast masses most commonly found in adolescents. Most fibroadenomas may be managed conservatively without surgery, however, some masses that are symptomatic (like pain or discomfort) or increasing in size may require surgical excision.
The surgical procedure that is usually carried out to remove the mass is known as excisional biopsy. In this procedure, the surgeon will removes breast tissue and sends it to a lab to check for cancer. Most commonly, the procedure will be done under general anesthesia and can take up to two days.
Post operation, patients are advised to rest and refrain from strenous activity for 6 to 8 weeks. Patients are also advised to wear compression vests or sports bras for 4 to 6 weeks to minimize swelling and pain.
Generally, your doctor will suggest that you came back for follow up around 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively, every 3 months, every 6 months for the second year, and then annually for the following year to assess any complications, recurrence of the mass, and additional masses.
Should the size of the mass removed is massive, patient may experience deformity or asymmetry. Reconstructive surgery is available to correct this, but usually not considered until at least one year after removal.
To further enquire into your condition accurately, further information via discussion is required before reaching a conclusion. Therefore, it is suggested that you refer this to a medical doctor.
