HPV Vaccination program
Hi doctors, I want to ask about HPV vaccination program for cervical cancer prevention. I am a 27 years old and about to be married early next year. I’ve read about the details of this program and one thing that captured me is that we are advised not to get pregnant within a year after getting the vaccine. Is it like we are advised not to do the sexual intercourse within that year or like we need to prepare protection during sexual intercourse?

For your information, the HPV vaccination comes in 3 doses at first visit, two months after that and at six months after that. This vaccination was meant to fight off the infection of HPV. Regarding the effect of this vaccine to pregnancy, researches has not found that HPV vaccination can harm a pregnancy or affect the baby. However, the data are very limited.
However, to be on the safe side, the basic guideline involving HPV vaccination does recommend this vaccination during pregnancy. This means that
- Pregnant woman should delay vaccination until after her pregnancy
- If a woman found out her pregnancy after starting the vaccine dose (dose 1 or 2), the remaining doses will be delayed until after her pregnancy
