Im a diabetic patient

Im a diabetic patient. Last month i was hospitalised because of septic arthritis on my right knee. What are the long term complications that can arise with this condition?

Hi, thank you for your question. It is very important to get the infection cleared quickly in order to preserve the joint. If the right antibiotic is given immediately, joint integrity can be preserved and you can expect a full recovery to its normal function. However, if the infection has been there for some time, there is the possibility of joint damage.

The prognosis of septic arthritis will depend on the duration of the infection, the exact microorganism causing the infection, and the underlying overall health of the patient. Some types of microorganisms are more aggressive and more resistant to treatment compared to others.

The longer the infection is present, the higher the possibility of joint damage. People who are immunocompromised are also at risk for more joint damage. This group of people include those who are on medication which suppresses their immune system, has past joint injury or disease, and health issues such as diabetes. Also, septic arthritis can lead to infection in other parts of the body and affect other organs.

Therefore, in order to prevent complications of septic arthritis, immediate medical attention, drainage of infected joint fluid, and appropriate administration of antibiotics are crucial. You should keep in mind that symptoms of septic arthritis include joint pain, redness, warmth, swelling, stiffness, fever and chills. If you think that you might be having septic arthritis, seek medical attention immediately before it is too late.

Your doctor will do a joint aspiration to determine if there is inflammation, and identify the microorganism responsible for this episode of septic arthritis and the suitable antibiotic. Prevention of septic arthritis is possible. This can be done by avoiding infections, damage to your skin and puncture wounds.
