I’m a hyperthyroid patient

Doctor. I’m a hyperthyroid patient. i’m on medication. cannot remember the name. How can I tell if my thyroid is working properly? Should i take extra drugs?

Hi there! Thank you for your question. Hyperthyroid is when the thyroid gland (an organ located at the neck) is producing too much hormones. These hormones are the T3 and T4 hormone which are known as thyroid hormones. The other symptoms that you should look out for are weight loss, increased appetite, restlessness/agitated, tremor, change in appearance/eye complains, neck swelling, itching, vomiting, diarrhea, joint pain, muscle stiffness and weakness, changes in periods in terms of volume or frequency, sweating, hallucination, very quick reflexes, palpitations and voice changes.

Thyroid hormones are responsible for all the metabolism in the body. All the symptoms you mentioned is cause due to the increased metabolism rate that occurs due to the increased thyroid hormone. The three main drugs used are Carbimazole (the main drug used). This is the drug that you are most probably on.

It reduces the production of thyroid hormones. Like every other drug, it has side effects which includes rash, anaemia, fever, and nerve damage. Secondly, Prophythiouracil - the main drug used during pregnancy because it carries less risk to the baby. Thirdly, beta-blocker.

Now to the second part of the question. The 2 possible explanations you might experience symptoms despite medication is that more time is needed before the carbimazole can actually take effect or the dose of the carbimazole given is not adequate. So when did you start taking your carbomazole? It needs time to actually take effect.

Clinical in improvements may not begin until 2 weeks and complete recovery of symptoms may take up to 6 months. These symptoms can be managed using carbimazole but it has to be at the right dose. Monitoring of the thyroid hormone (T3, T4 levels) should be done within the first 6 week to ensure adequate doses of the drug is given for maximum results with minimum side effects. I suggest you go back to the doctor and inform him about the symptoms you are having (if any) for him/her to readjust the dose if needed. If not continue just as before.
