My period is irregular

My period is irregular for the past few months and my period pain is really bad.
Should I be worry?

Hello there. Thank you for the inquiry. I understand that you are concerned about the irregularity and the unusual pain. Irregular period happens when there is a hormonal imbalance.

This can oestrogen, progesterone or thyroid hormones. High stress levels may make the body conserve more energy by inhibiting ovulation. This cause irregular period. Besides that, too much of exercise, extremes of body weight and certain medications may also cause irregular period.

Sometimes, the menstrual cycle may go haywire after stopping birth control pills. If you have been this problem for a long time, you should speak to your doctor about doing some tests that will rule out thyroid problems and pregnancy. Lifestyle modification is also necessary in regaining the normal cycle.

Try making diet and exercise changes. Learn how to deal with stress by meeting a counsellor. Painful period is also known as dysmenorrhoea. There may not be identifiable causes of painful period. However, there are some group of people who are at a higher risk of having it, such as being very young, family history of similar pain, heavy period bleeding, and nulliparous and have irregular periods.

The explanation as to why it becomes painful is that prostaglandin triggers muscle contractions in the womb that expels the lining. These contractions are painful. However, if the pain is greater, it could be due to underlying medical conditions. The first one is premenstrual syndrome (PMS) happening one to two weeks prior to bleeding.

Endometriosis could also be a possible reason as the major characteristic is painful and heavy bleeding. Fibroids may also cause painful menstruation as the growth presses against the womb giving pain. If the pain interferes with your daily activities, I recommend that you see a doctor.
