Hi and thanks you for your enquiries.

Based on your statements, you may have an irregular periods if the length of your menstrual cycle which is the gap between your periods starting keeps altering or changing. Your periods may arrive early or late. The average menstrual cycle time is usually 28 days, although it is normal for it to be a little bit shorter or longer than that.

There are many possible factors that cause irregular periods. Sometimes they can just be normal for you but not normal for others. The factors are:

  • puberty which is your periods can be irregular for the 1st year or two
  • the start of the menopause which is usually between the 45 and 55 year old
  • early pregnancy do a pregnancy test to rule this out
  • extreme weight gain or weight loss
  • excessive exercise
  • emotional changes.
  • hormonal contraception for example the contraceptive pill or intrauterine system (IUS)
  • thyroid problem o
  • polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

But see a doctor if your periods abruptly become irregular and you are under 45, you have periods more often than every 3 weeks, you have irregular periods and at the same time you are struggling to get pregnant, your periods last longer than 1 week or there is a big difference between your longest and shortest days of menstrual cycle.

There should not be anything wrong, but it is always a good idea to get checked out with your local GP to see what the cause can be.
