Pregnancy & COVID19 Vaccine

Hello doc,

I am currently pregnant in my first trimester. Being a frontliner myself allows me to be able to get the COVID19 vaccine early. However due to my current condition, would I still be eligible, if so, would I be experiencing any different (possible) side effects or taking extra risk towards my fetus development?

Thank you in advance.

Hello, and thank you for contacting us

Pregnancy is a wonderful experience, make sure you receive the right nutrition for healthy baby development.

First and foremost, congratulation on the pregnancy. I wish you and the family a happy and memorable experience throughout this journey.

However according to the latest information, experts have yet to gather enough data to support

  • the rate of success
  • possibe side effects
  • other risk associated to the growing fetus

In response to COVID19 vaccine inoculation for pregnant women, as previous clinical trials were not focusing on pregnant participant. Thus you must take note of the current and ongoing updates before making any informed decision.

Nonetheless, a mother must also understand that the risk of not having a vaccine would very much expose a frontliner to possible infection and grieve complications of COVID19. According to this justification, the danger of COVID19 transmission far outweighs the possible adverse effect of the vaccine. Our Ministry of Health (MOH) has also given the green light for mothers, pregnant women and those that are breastfeeding their babies to be vaccinated especially if they are amongst the frontliners or high-risk group, but prior to the decision, they are required to discuss and consult a certified obstetrician.

In a conclusion it is also best that you contact your personal healthcare provider, your local pregnancy physician or a related specialist to verify & further, discuss in-depth with regards to your health and possible vaccination needs. You may also contact the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) for further information. In the meantime, continue practising good hand hygiene, wearing a face mask and normalizing social/physical distancing.
