Sore throat, headache, chest pain and sometimes coughing

Dear doctor, last month 27th January 2020. I went to Europe for my cruise vacation from Barcelona to Rome. There have more than 6000 passengers in this cruise including around 30~40% China tourists inside. During that time when COVID-19 was spreading fast in Wuhan. When I came back from Barcelona at 4th Feb 2020, my throat was began to feel itchy.

The first week when I came back to Malaysia, sometimes I feel like getting fever and then after a while then recover back to normal body temp. My throat is itchy but no coughing. Until 14th February 2020, I am feeling better but my parents were came back from Europe during that day. I went to airport to fetch them during this night. My parents were feeling sickness too and my mother was keep coughing. At 16th February 2020, my throat became very itchy. During that night, I can feel that my throat - the part that we called it “uvula” was get swollen. I was hardly to breath during when I lay down on the bed, also I has headache during that night.

Since 16th Feb 2020, last few days my throat is itchy and sometimes headache and my chest is feel painful like air stuck inside my chest. Only until today is feeling better. This morning I have wake up better, with no headache and my throat feel better. However until afternoon, when I sit whole day inside office, my throat now began to get itchy. I need to keep wear mask to avoid to breath that air-cond cold air because when I remove my mask, my throat begin the get itchy again.

I’m not so sure am I get infected by influenza or COVID-19. Actually I was injected influenza vaccine back to last year November 2019.

Thank you for your questions. The following answers regarding your current queries are just general descriptions due to the limited information provided by you. Click on this link (KKM COVID-19) for further information regarding coronavirus or for a private consultation with our doctors.

Based on your description, there are many factors that can cause sore throat such as:

  • Inflammation of the throat (esophagitis) - due to viral infection, smokes (from haze or smoking)
  • Dehydration - drinking less water
  • Acid reflux - due to GERD
  • Candida infection - usually in people with diabetes or decrease immune level

Patients who are infected with the coronavirus may manifest symptoms like:

However, the symptoms alone are not sufficient for the patient to be diagnosed or to be confirmed to be infected with Coronavirus because they need to have a serology test to confirm the disease.
