This is the first time i have a long period. Already 11 days but the amount is very less. Should i be worried about it?

Hi, thank you very much for raising this issue with us. As grown adult women, it is understandable to feel worried if there are changes that occur with our body, especially if those changes are sudden and are related to the gynaecological system. Normally, the average period lasts about 2 days to 1 week, however there are instances where a person's period can sometimes extend far longer that their normal period (11 days, in your case).

This can occur every now and then in a woman's life, most commonly around the age of 40 years old, and there are several conditions which are related to prolonged period. To investigate your condition further, it is best for you to consult a doctor (a general practitioner or gynaecologist) regarding this.

Your doctor might require more information than that you have already provided, such as the nature of your periods, if you are currently having any medical conditions, medications, family history of disease, and many more questions that might be relevant for a thorough diagnosis.

You should be prepared to report any other symptoms that you may be experiencing alongside your abnormal period, such as weight gain, period pain, acne, abnormal bleeding elsewhere, etc. A physical examination might also be necessary as abnormal bleeding can be a sign of some conditions such as thyroid disease, or something more serious.

There are various tools and imaging techniques that are available to rule out these conditions such as getting an ultrasound scan done, which is painless and gives the doctor more information to help in making a diagnosis. Some health clinics do not have an ultrasound scan, so you might be referred to a nearby hospital or private specialist.
