Can yeast infection be transmitted through sexual contact?

Hi Doc, can yeast infection be transmitted through sexual contact?

Dr Ramzdhan,

Hi and thank you for the question. It must be uncomfortable to be in your situation. Vaginal candida infections are a fairly common health problems. They can cause:

  • abnormal genital discharge
  • discomfort during peeing
  • burning and itching in the genital area

These symptoms may make it uncomfortable to have a sexual activity. Having sexual activity with a candida infection can carry risks even if you do not shows any symptoms prior to that. Sexual activity can prolong the candida infection and allowing symptoms to return.

These symptoms may be worse than they were before because it occurs twice. Sexual activity can also passed the infection from you to your sexual partner. Having sex with a candida infection can be very painful or, at least, extremely uncomfortable. If your vulva or labia are swollen, you may find skin to skin contact may be too rough.

Friction can even rub the skin raw. Penetration during sexual activity can aggravate the inflamed tissue, as well as increase itching and irritation. And do not insert anything into the vagina bacause can introduce new bacteria. This cam make your infection even worst. Besides that, when you are aroused, your genital may begin to self lubricate.

This can produce more moisture to an already moist environment in it, making itching and discomfort more pronounced. If your partner develops a candida infection after engaging in sexual activity with you, they may transmit it back to you during your next sexual activity. Abstaining until you and your partner both successfully cured is the only way to prevent this cycle from continuing itself.
