Currently on Euthyrox 25mg

Hypothyroidism. Currently on Euthyrox 25mg, but am pregnant so taking 50mg. I’d like to get medication which can help my condition

Hello there, madam. Thank you for the inquiry. I would like to congratulate you on the pregnancy. From your description, you have hypothyroidism and your medication those has been increased and you need a prescription. In pregnancy, several changes happen to the thyroid.

The thyroid gland becomes double of the normal size and the pregnancy hormones called human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) is increased and it is able to bind on thyroid receptors subsequently stimulating the thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) to reduce. Subsequently, the feedback mechanism attempts to lower the overall thyroid hormones, and in your case may cause a decrease in thyroid hormone levels.

This explains the need for an increased dose. If not treated, hypothyroidism may affect you and your baby. Inadequately treated hypothyroidism may give rise to symptoms such as muscle weakness, low red blood cells, pre-eclampsia, abnormal placenta that will affect the baby’s development. Thyroid hormones are very important in the development of the brain and nervous system.

It is mandatory in most countries to screen pregnant mothers for thyroid problems. As for you, check-ups every six to eight weeks with your doctor for thyroid monitoring is very important. As soon as you have given birth, your medications dose will be reduced to the value of pre-pregnancy thyroid hormones. It is very important that you consume your medication accordingly as congenital hypothyroidism of your baby can be prevented.

I recommend that you should not take your pre-natal vitamins within three to four hours after taking your thyroid medication as iron and calcium may block the thyroid hormone absorption in the body. As for prescription, I recommend that you chat with our doctors on our platform to obtain the prescription.
