Effectiveness of covid19 vaccine

Hello ! My grandmother just got her 1st dose of pfizer vaccine the other day so we decided to check on how she’s doing via videocall. To my horror, she said that her arm was swollen so she rub some counterpain analgesic cream on the vaccination spot😱 We told her to stop doing that & just put some cold compress on her arm instead. Will her action decrease the effectiveness of the vaccine? Please & thank you in advanced.

Hi and thank you for this question.
We understand your worry and will explain this to you further regarding this question.
We are glad that you have asked your grandma to not apply any cream on the injection site.
For your information, this vaccine is an intramuscular injection that deposits the vaccine deep into a muscle as it is then absorbed by the rich blood supply in one of the muscular layers(fascia).
The vaccine efficacy will not be decreased just because an analgesic cream is applied over the injection site.
That being said, it is advised to not apply anything over this area as the injection site might get infected and the arm could worsen in pain.
Thank you and we hope this answer was beneficial.
You can further ask a doctor online if you have any other questions.
