There are many causes which can lead to excessive menstrual bleeding. Most common reason is hormonal imbalance. Adenomyosis is a condition which occurs when glands from the endometrium become embedded in the uterine muscle, often causing heavy bleeding and painful periods. Menorrhagia is a well-known side effect of using a non hormonal intrauterine device for birth control such as intrauterine device (IUD) and if this is so then you can plan for alternative management options.

Cancers such as uterine and cervical cancer also causes excessive menstrual bleeding. There are some bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand's disease(a condition in which an important blood-clotting factor is deficient or impaired) which can cause abnormal menstrual bleeding.
