Two months ago, my period was bleeding lightly. Which has never happened.
Last month it returned to normal. This month it is again bleeding so lightly. Is it because I’m on my birth control? But I have been on them for a year and I haven’t had this problem. I have had irregular period before but only if it’s late or too early. I have not had a problem with my period flow before. Should I be concerned?

  • Hi, thank you for question. From you question above, i understand that you are having two episodes of spotting or light bleeding one year after taking the oral contraceptive pills. You said that you had irregular period before, but in general this condition will gets better you started the oral contraceptive pills. Some oral contraceptive pill causes regular bleeding on every fourth week, whereas some does not bleed by taking only 21 pills.

  • It is common to have irregular bleeding if you using oral contraceptive pills continuously. However, do not stop taking your oral contraceptive pills. Regular period only happens when you are taking the placebo pills (no hormones in it) or stopped taking pills. Since you do not have period for the past one year, you are most likely taking 21 days of hormonal pills. This is due to presence of sexual hormones such as estrogen and progesterone from the pills that help to maintain the uterus lining.

  • There are few causes to your spotting such as missing or skipping the oral contraceptive pills, vomiting, diarrhoea or interaction with other medications. Vomiting, diarrhoea and some medications can cause poor absorption of the oral contraceptive pills into the bloodstream. This can cause the hormonal level in the body to fluctuate and causing shedding of uterus lining, leading to light bleeding.

  • It is also important to have protected sex if you missed any oral contraceptive pills. Pregnancy may cause irregular bleeding and stomach cramps. So, please talk to your doctor to determine the cause of your problem. Hope you have a good day !!!
