Asking for my dad about vaccination whether he is eligible to take it or not

Good evening doctor, my dad is 74 years old. He have stroke, hypertension, high cholesterol and COPD and a smoker. May I know will he be able to receive this vaccine or not as he have a lot of diseases and how the vaccine will affect him? I tried to advise him to quit smoking since he have a lot of diseases but he won’t listen. Thank you doctor.

We understand your concern regarding your father's health condition. For your information, your father will be able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. He will be categorized under high risk individuals and he will be put under phase 2 of the immunization program and the phase is expected to start around April this year.

Regarding how will the vaccine affect him, usually the vaccine effect is self-limiting and the side effect will resolves within hours to days. Depending on individuals, some may show the symptoms of the vaccine side effects and some does not experience any side effects at all. After he received the injection, he will be put under observation for 30 minutes to monitor whether he is experiencing any side effects of the vaccination or not.

  • Pain or discomfort

  • Redness
