I’ve been having recurring kidney infection

Hi I’ve been having recurring kidney infection (uti) for the past 6months. Antibiotics doesn’t seem to be working as it keeps coming back. What do i do? Tq

Hi, thank you for your question. You should feel completely better after a 2-week course of antibiotics. If you think that your anitibiotics is not working, you should get back to your doctor.

Your doctor may refer you to a nephrologist (kidney specialist) or urologist (urinary surgeon) and they will order some tests to determine if you have any underlying problem that makes you at risk of getting recurrent kidney infections.

Factors that can increase your risk of getting recurrent kidney infections are if you are a woman, you have a weakened immune system, diabetes, kidney stones or a structural abnormality in your urinary tract. It is also likely that your doctor will prescribe you a low dose of antibiotics to be taken on a regular basis to prevent you from getting recurrent kidney infections.

There are other things that you can do to reduce your risk of kidney infections. First of all, drink plenty of water. Fluids can help to flush out bacteria from your bladder. Avoid holding your bladder and urinate as soon as you feel the urge. Empty your bladder after intercourse. This helps to clear bacteria from the urethra. Besides, wipe from front to back after urinating.

This prevents bacteria from the vagina or anus from getting into the urethra. Avoid using feminine products in the genital area. Feminine products such as deodarants can cause irritation. Other than that, consume cranberry products. There are studies that shows that daily intake of cranberry juice can prevent recurrent urinary tract infections.

Also, you should ensure you are taking your antibiotics the right way. Finish the full course of antibiotics even if you feel better. Do not use antibiotics when you do not need them. Do not take antibiotics from a previous illness.
