Pregnancy for Women with no Thyroid Gland

Hi, I’m a woman in my late 20’s and in my younger day, I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer. I had full thyroidectomy and on levothyroxine since then. Id like advice on what should I follow up on if I’m planning to start a family(child specifically). Should I be worried of anything and any recommendations on doctors who specialisez in pregnancy and thyroid related issues?

Greetings! Thank you for your questions.

First and foremost, we truly understand your concerns regarding your symptoms and other health problems you might be facing. For your information, levothyroxine is the most common medicine used to treat an underactive thyroid during pregnancy. This medicine replaces the thyroid hormone T4, which your own thyroid isn’t making or isn’t making enough of. It is safe to take this medicine during pregnancy. Thyroid medicines that contain the T3 hormone are not safe to use during pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey into motherhood. Make sure you get enough nutrients for you and your baby.

If you had hypothyroidism before getting pregnant, you most likely need to increase the amount of medicine you take during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about your medicine as soon as you find out you are pregnant. Your doctor can check to make sure you are taking the right dose by checking your TSH levels during pregnancy.
