Routine medical appointment during coronavirus outbreak?

If you belong to High-risk group for severe illness (COVID-19). Should you keep your routine medical appointment for warfarin during coronavirus outbreak?

In this case, it’s my mum 57 years old with several health conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke with history of AF).

If the appointment can’t be avoided, what precaution steps need to be taken by the high-risk group while attending the medical appointment?

Greetings!

Thank you for your question. Warfarin is important for your mother and so it the monitoring of her condition. It is advised that routine medical appointment be followed unless your mother is informed to postpone it by the clinic. The precautionary steps suggested are the same for everyone. These are the guidelines from the Centre of Disease Control (CDC):

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

Hospitals have their protocol when it comes to controlling infectious diseases. Hence, you may play your part by abiding to the precautionary measures stated above.
