Casual Contact COVID=19

Answered by: Dr Sashini Seeni

Hello. I would like to ask about those identified as casual contact by MySejahtera.

If based on this enquiry, https://www.doctoroncall.com.my/tanya/soalan/casual-contact-covid19/139661

The doctor replied if Close Contact. But what about Casual Contact.

  1. Must do self quarantine?
  2. Must do swab test?

My question is pertaining to Casual Contact and not Close Contact.

Thank You.

Greetings! Thank you for your questions.

For your information, as a casual contact, you are considered to be at low risk of contracting COVID-19. You are unlikely to get infected just from having been in the same place with patient with COVID-19. You are a casual contact if you have been within only two meters of someone with COVID-19 for less than 15 minutes.

Recent studies revealed that between 5% – 80% of the COVID-19 cases may be asymptomatic, which means they exhibit no signs and symptoms of the same. This group of people, therefore, tends to spread COVID-19 without really knowing it. That’s why it is important to monitor any symptoms within 10 days or during quarantine. Although at this moment, it is not compulsory for a casual contact to do swab test in Malaysia, you must get tested as soon as possible if you develop any symptoms. Symptoms to look out for include:

  • fever (37.5°C or higher) or history of fever (night sweats, chills)
  • cough
  • shortness of breath (difficulty breathing).
  • runny nose
  • loss of taste
  • loss of smell
  • sore throat
