Consultation on the need for COVID 19 swab test

Hi Dr. I would like to have your advice on this. My relative was diagnosed positive COVID19 on 29/5. She started to have symptoms on 24/5. My dad visited her on 14/5. Will you advise my dad to go for swab test? Thank you for your time and attention.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to us.

We understand the problem you are currently experiencing. Based on your statement, we would like to advise that your father should go for the test as he is considered as a close contact. On top of that, more information is needed especially the contact history and full medical history of your father. If you are living with your father, please monitor your symptoms and others that lives in the same household as well.

According to the Ministry of Health, close contact refers to either:

  • Meeting or direct contact with a COVID-19 positive patient for the past 14 days
  • Health care-associated exposure, including providing direct care for COVID-19 patients, working with health care workers infected with COVID-19, visiting patients or staying in the same close environment of a COVID-19 patient.
  • Working together in close proximity or sharing the same classroom environment with a with COVID-19 patient
  • Traveling together with COVID-19 patient in any kind of conveyance
  • Living in the same household as a COVID-19 patient

I would also encourage your father to answer this quiz on Risk Assessment for COVID-19 to evaluate their health status in regards to this disease. After completing this quiz, he will be classified into several categories. Further instructions will be given at the end of the quiz. Please act accordingly.

Meanwhile try to maintain physical and social distance between close friends and family members. You may also click on this link to directly request a COVID-19 screening test.

But if you want to seek a second opinion, you may try to contact the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC). Other than that, do practice good hand hygiene and normalize wearing face mask in public.
