Got Covid 19 Symptoms and require to take pneumococcal vaccine

hi Doctor, May I know if baby 4 months got covid 19 symptoms which is coughing , is he allowed to take pneumococcal vaccines (gov program)? Any side effects?

Greetings, thank you for your question.

Pneumococcal vaccines is used to protect against invasive pneumococcal disease, such as meningitis, and acute otitis media among infants and children. Children can still get vaccines, even with a fever or mild illness. Because a mild illness does not affect how well the body responds to a vaccine , your child can still be vaccinated if he or she has a low grade fever, a cold, runny nose or cough.

For your information, the most common symptoms of COVID-19 in children are fever and cough, but children may have any of these signs or symptoms of COVID-19:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Stomachache
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Poor appetite or poor feeding, especially in babies under 1 year old

Monitor your baby for COVID-19 symptoms every day

Pay particular attention to:

  • Fever (temperature 37.5’C or higher)
  • Sore throat
  • New uncontrolled cough that causes difficulty breathing (for a child with chronic allergic/asthmatic cough, see if there is a change from their usual cough)
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, or stomachache
  • New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever

I would encourage you, on behalf of your baby to answer this quiz on Risk Assessment for COVID-19 to evaluate your son’s health status in regards to this disease. After completing this quiz, your son will be classified into several categories. Further instructions will be given at the end of the quiz. Please act accordingly.

If your baby had direct contact with a suspected case, you may also take him directly to visit the hospitals in this list for a COVID-19 screening test. (Designated Hospital for COVID-19). Other than that, do practice good hand hygiene and wear face mask or face shield in public.
