How is dengue fever transmitted?

Hi Dr, one of my former classmates was diagnosed with dengue fever yesterday and had to be admitted into the hospital. I was in the same class as him yesterday. I am wondering how is dengue fever transmitted? Is it contagious?

Greetings and thank you for your question.

Dengue fever is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These mosquitoes breed in stagnant water found in containers, such as water storage tanks, flower pots, and discarded tires, and are most active during the day.

These mosquitoes become infected with the dengue virus when they feed on the blood of a person already infected with the virus. Once infected, the mosquito can then transmit the virus to other individuals it bites. Unlike malaria, dengue is not directly transmitted from person to person. Instead, it requires the intermediary role of mosquitoes for transmission between humans.
