Blood pressure went up

Blood pressure went up. Could it be linked to kidney issue?

Hi, thank you for your question. High blood pressure is linked to kidney issues in 2 ways. First of all, let us look at the functions of the kidneys. They remove waste products in the body, regulate water balance, control the blood pressure by getting rid of excess salt and water, and they are responsible for the production of red blood cells in your body.

High blood pressure can be a result of kidney problems. Normal healthy kidneys are able to produce aldosterone (a hormone) that helps to regulate your blood pressure. However, if your kidneys are damaged and they fail to produce this hormone, then your body will have trouble regulating blood pressure normally.

On the other hand, high blood pressure can also cause kidney problems. Like all other organs in your body, kidneys need oxygen and nutrients to function well. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause blood vessels around your kidneys to become weaker, harder and narrower. When blood vessels are damaged, your kidneys fail to receive sufficient oxygen and nutrients that are required for normal functioning.

The kidneys eventually fail and stop removing the waste products and extra water in your body, increasing your blood pressure further. This accumulation of extra water in your body also causes oedema (swelling), mainly in the ankles and legs, less so in the face or hands.
When your kidney function deteriorates further, you may develop symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, feeling tired, decreased or increased need to urinate, dry skin, darkened skin and weight loss.
