I am planning to go on birth control pills

Hi,

I am 25 years old female and I am planning to go on birth control pills. The reason why, its because of irregular period that i had and i always have 10 - 13 days of period since i got my period. On top of that, i notice that lately, my period caused severe acne problem which i never had before.

other than that, i want to take it as my contraception method.

can you suggest which birth control pills i should start taking?

  • Hello there, miss. Thank you for your inquiry. There are several types of contraception. Pills, implants, injections, patch as well as intra-uterine devices are the methods available. However, which contraceptive method is the best for you may change as phases of life changes. In your case, it seems to me that the most suitable method for you is by using Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills (COCP) given that you are young, having irregular period as well as acne problem.

  • COCP contains artificial oestrogen and progesterone. It is an oral contraceptive pill that also provides other benefits such as clearing out acne and regulating the period. It works by inhibiting the ovulation process and making the womb covered by a thick layer of mucus to prevent sperm from reaching. The efficacy of it depends on compliancy to medication and how correctly it is consumed.

  • The failure rate is about 0.03%. The advantages of getting on the pill aside from regulating menses is that it is a non-invasive method and it allows a woman to control the timing of menses in case of events such as holidays and competitions. It may also help to reduce pain in Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS).

  • Besides that, it is proven to reduce the incidence of ovarian, endometrial and colorectal cancer. However, in some women, there is an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, in which a blood clot forms in the blood vessels. Most brands come as a 21-day pill that is to be taken for 21 days straight and stopped for the next seven days.

  • If you miss a pill, take the next dose. Do not double dose. If you experience side effects such as shortness of breath, please seek a doctor’s help immediately. I hope this helps.
