I just discovered a small, painless lump beside my nipple

Hello, I just discovered a small, painless lump beside my nipple. And it moves under the fingers. Is it cancerous? Thank you.

Hi there! Thank you for your question. From the description of your symptoms, it appears that you might have fibroadenoma. I will explain about fibroadenoma below. Cancer is unlikely because it is freely moveable, cancer are usually fixed to the skin or muscle below.

It should be noted that, any form of breast lump at any age group must be assessed using the triple therapy. The triple therapy consist of clinical examination, imaging (ultrasound/mammogram) and tissue biopsy. So I suggest you undergo this assessment at your doctor.

Fibroadenoma is a benign breast growth that occurs at the early reproductive life of a female. It usually occurs between 15-25 year old females but are types of fbroadenoma that occurs at 50 as well. Fibroadenoma is the enlargement of the breast lobules, the gland that is responsible for milk production.

The characteristics of the lump in fibroadenoma are as follows. It is a freely mobile mass. Which means it can move around freely when you move it. I believe this is what you are experiencing. This is also known as a breast mouse. The mass is also painless. The painless lump you have is highly suggestive of fibroadenoma as well.

It is usually small about 2-3cm. Usually giant fibroadenoma that are more than 5cm occurs during puberty due to the hormonal changes. Speaking of hormonal changes, there usually will changes in size during menstruation, pregnancy and breast feeding. It is usually slow growing. It is usually smooth and rounded.

Also there is almost usually no nipple discharge.
Nevertheless as mentioned above, eventhough cancer is unlike in this scenario, it can only be confirmed using the triple assessment. So, please undergo this assessment at your doctor just to be safe and undergo the required management.
