Is it true that salt intake can cause hypertension?

Hi doctor, is it true that salt intake can cause hypertension?

Hi, thank you for your question.Yes, high salt intake can cause hypertension. Salt increases blood pressure by having effect on your kidneys and arteries.
Kidneys remove extra water in your body by filtering your blood.

Here, extra water is drew out and delivered to the bladder through your ureters to be removed as urine. This is done through a process called osmosis, which draws extra water out of your blood. The amount of water to be retained or removed from the body depends on the amount of sodium in your body.

Eating too much salt increases the amount of sodium in your bloodstream and messes up the delicate balance of sodium and potassium, decreasing the ability of the kidneys to remove extra water. This results in a higher blood pressure due to the extra water and extra strain on the blood vessels leading to the kidneys. This extra strain can damage the kidneys can cause kidney disease in the long run.

Kidney disease can also cause hypertension when they fail to produce (a hormone that regulates blood pressure), then your body will have trouble regulating blood pressure normally.

Meanwhile, in the arteries, the extra blood pressure caused by eating too much salt puts extra strain on the walls of your arteries. To cope with this extra strain, the muscles in the artery walls become stronger and thicker. This makes the arteries narrower and increases your blood pressure further.

This is also why the World Health Organisation (WHO) strongly recommends salt reduction to reduce the numebr of deaths from hypertension, heart disease and stroke.
