My shirts look lose on me

My friends and family have noticed that my shirts look lose on me . This has been going on for the past 4 months or so. I am not sure if I have some serious health issue like cancer. I am worried because my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago. Is there a screening I have to go for, doctor? Linda L.

Hi there! Thank you for the question. It is apparent that you are worried about your condition. First of all, I am sorry to hear about your sister’s condition. As to answer your question, losing weight unintentionally can be a sign of cancer and as you have mentioned that your sister is a breast cancer patient.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in female population and the survival rate has increased steadily. There are many types of breast cancer such as angiosarcoma, ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and inflammatory breast cancer. Redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the skin of an orang, newly inverted nipple, peeling, scaling or flaking of the pigmented area of skin surrounding the nipple (areola) or breast skin breast lump or thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue, change in the size, shape or appearance of a breast and changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling are the symptoms of breast cancer.

Breast cancer can be caused by hormones, lifestyle environmental factors and genetics (inherited breast cancer). Factors that are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer include:

  • female gender
  • increasing age
  • past history of breast conditions
  • family history of breast cancer
  • inherited genes that increase cancer risk
  • radiation exposure
  • obesity
  • having your first child at an older age
  • having never been pregnant
  • postmenopausal hormone therapy
  • drinking alcohol

It is advisable to do a mammogram, an X-ray of the breast and are commonly used to screen for breast cancer. Besides mammogram, you can also do a self examination of the breast to check for lumps, nipple discharge and inverted nipples. Hence it is advisable to consult a doctor for your condition. This will prevent any future consequences.
