6 month old baby crying more than usual. I am worried

Hi doc. My 6 month old boy is crying more than usual, his nose is watery and the eyes are red. His body is a bit warm. He can’t sleep very well and refuses to feed himself. Why is that doctor? I am very worried about him

Hi, thank you for the question. It is understandable to be worried about the child’s well being as he refuses to feed and sleep well. It is very likely that your baby caught some upper respiratory tract infections due to immature immune system. Flu normally presents with fever and is more serious than a common cold. Both conditions can cause watery nose, red eyes and cough.

Baby normally get this infections from direct contact with infected person or through the air where there is virus. The red eye is known as conjunctivitis, the inflammation of the membrane lining the white part of the eye. A warm body can be a body response to infections, helping to clear those infections. A fever is considered when the temperature is higher than 38.5 degree celcius.

Conjunctivitis are common caused by allergic, infections or something gets into his eyes. Infection is the most common among all causes and its can be a viral or bacterial conjunctivitis. If your child has previous cold or flu, it can spread to the eyes, causing red and watery eyes. It may affect one or both eyes as the virus or bacteria can spread from one eye to another eye. Allergic conjunctivitis is due to body immune system response towards an allergen, such as dust mites, animal dander, pollens or moulds.

Bring along your baby to your child’s doctor to have a checkup since he is in such discomfort. Healthcare providers will help to determine the cause of the problem. There is no cure for common cold or flu, but treatment of symptoms early can ease the discomfort, helping the baby improves sleeping and feeding.

Do you know that your immune system plays role in the effectiveness of vaccines?
