Runny nose and sore throat

I have been having runny nose and sore throat since about a week ago. I went to see a doctor before, but the condition has not reduced yet. What should I do?

Hello there and thank you for the question.

What you may be having is an upper respiratory infection. Most of these infections are caused by viruses. Bacteria can also be the cause of the infection, however, it mostly happens in chronic infections. Viral infections are usually characterized by mild fever, runny nose and cough. There is no cure for viral infection except for supportive measures such as adequate hydration. A bacterial infection is characterized by moderate to high grade fever and coloured phlegm. Although sore throat, nasal symptoms and cough may be present, there is no prominent signs or symptoms. It may last up to 14 days. In my opinion, the persistence of the symptoms could be due to several reasons.

Firstly, adequate rest is very important in healing. Make sure you get enough of sleep as this helps with the immune system. Secondly, you may be dehydrated. Make sure to drink adequate amount of water in a day. This helps to keep the mucus thin and ease congestion. Thirdly, high level of stress may contribute to feeling sick. A high level of stress takes a toll on your immune system. This makes you more vulnerable to cold. Stress makes your body to respond less to threats like viruses. Use salt water gargle, cough drops or throat spray to relieve the throat pain. Fourthly, it may be due to wrong medication or insufficient medication.

Your symptoms sounds more like an ongoing viral infection and now it has gotten worse with bacterial infection. It is either the doctor has treated you with viral medications or the antibiotics given does not cover the organism that you are infected with. I would suggest that you consult your doctor again and discuss the appropriate treatment.

Do you know that your immune system plays role in the effectiveness of vaccines?
