I just started to cough and my tonsils are swollen

I just started to cough and my tonsils are swollen. It’s not painful yet.

I saw a GP 2 days ago and I started on some lozenges for throat and actifad (flu pill) once a night.
I felt feverish and cold and runny nose. No fever. No antibiotics prescribed.

I think I need cough medication. I prefer drowsy kind to sleep it off.

  • Hi, thank you for the question. Based on your symptoms, you are having upper respiratory tract infections. It is more likely to be a flu than a common cold. No antibiotics was given as this condition flu is caused by the influenza viruses. Normally the treatment are given to relieve the symptoms and helps your body to recover faster.

  • Lozenges helps you soothe the throat. Actifad (flu pill) contains helps you to relieve the runny, sneezing and nose-block symptoms. Cough is a body response to clear the phlegm from your body. It is good to clear the infections from the chest. Therefore, i think that why your doctor hold back the cough medications for the time being. However, if your cough is so bad that is affecting daily activities, you may need to get back to your GP to get cough medication.

  • Always seek help from the healthcare providers when you have difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, persistent symptoms, recurrent infections and symptoms becomes worse. You can reduce coughing by trying to sleep in a semi-upright position. Try to limit exposure to irritants such as smoke, cold weather and dust.

  • You may try spoonful of honey that can help to reduce the cough. Always remember to drink plenty of fluid to replenish the fluid losses from your body. Have a good day !!!
