After coming back from the visit, i had runny nose

I recently went to a hospital to visit my sick brother over there. After coming back from the visit, i had runny nose. I thought it was a regular cold, but the cold hasn’t go away eventhough I have taken antibiotics for 4 days now. Should I revisit my physician?

  • Hello, thank you for your question. From the description that you have provided, it sounds like you might have contracted an upper respiratory tract infection (an umbrella term used for any type of infection involving the upper airways) which most of the time is caused by a virus. Symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection may include fever, runny nose, sore throat and cough.

  • Other symptoms not mentioned may also be present. It is reasonable to be worried that after four days of antibiotic treatment, you are still feeling unwell. However, upper respiratory tract infections have been reported to last up to two weeks, so you should not feel too worried about it. Just continue your course of antibiotics and make sure to get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluid, to help your body recover.

  • Do not stop the course of antibiotics without first consulting a doctor, and also do not stop even if you feel like you have recovered. During the length of the disease, you may feel like you have lost your appetite for food, but it is important to eat in order to provide energy for your body to recover and fight off the bugs.

  • While at home, you should observe proper sneezing and coughing etiquette as well as practising good hygiene (always wash your hands, do not share cups and other utensils, etc) so that you do not spread the germs and infect other members of your family. If you feel like your fever is getting worse, or if new symptoms arise, you should seek help from your doctor straight away.

Do you know that your immune system plays role in the effectiveness of vaccines?
