Coughing more than 3 days

It’s been 5 days for my uncle coughing non-stop, for which we’ve been trying to treat him using Azithromycin but there haven’t been much improvement only fever was there but it come and goes and he coughs pretty hard sometimes too.
Shall we stop Azithromycin and replace it with Doxicycline ? Will it be alright and safe ?

Greetings!

I understand your worry since you are suffering from chronic cough. This symptom can be caused by other health problems such as:

  • Other bacterial or viral infection
  • Tonsillitis
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Asthma
  • Allergic Rhinitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Tuberculosis
  • COPD

It is wise to get examine first on what is the cause of your uncle’s coughing. Giving antibiotics without knowing the cause of the problem would futile. For your information, there are different antibiotics that are specific for certain bacteria and if your uncle’s condition is due to virus or something else, antibiotic won’t cure the problem. That is why it I encouraged for your uncle to visit the clinic and get the right treatment.
