Grinding Knee at Age 25

Im 25 years old and experience grinding knee when climbing up the stairs. I have no pain nor problem when going down the stairs. What could be the cause and who should i consult with? a GP? Physiotherapist? Chiropractor?

Hi and thank you for asking us here at DoctorOnCall.

Through the question and statement you gave on the above section, I completely understand your concern over this matter. For your information there are a few causes for grinding sound of the knee, which are:

  • crepitus
  • cavitation is the burst of tiny air bubbles in the joint fluid
  • meniscus tear could happen if you feel some pain with the clicking sound
  • osteoarthritis if you’re experiencing severe pain with the clicking sound

Grinding sound is considered normal and harmless. It can happen at any age, but it is more common as people get older. It can affect one or both knees. But if it happens after a trauma or if there is pain and swelling, it may need medical attention.
