Hi, thank you for your question. Treatment of hypertension will depend on the severity of your condition. If your systolic blood pressure is 120-159mmHg, diastolic pressure 80-99mmHg and you have low risk of developing heart issues, you can try to manage your condition without taking medication.

If your blood pressure is higher than that or you have higher risk of developing heart issues, you will have to start taking medications. If you have been on lifestyle changes and still has elevated blood pressure, your doctor will also start you on medications.
Lifestyle changes can help control hypertension.

First of all, eat a healthy diet. Consume diet rich in wholegrain, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, lean meat and fish. Limit your intake of food high in trans fat and saturated fats. Examples of these are:

  • full-fat dairy products
  • red meat, margarine
  • bakery products
  • deep-fried food

Cut down on intake of salt.

Also, you should exercise regularly. Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week or do vigorous aerobic exercises 20 minutes 3 times a week. Regular exercises not only helps to maintain a healthy weight, but they also reduce your risk of developing hypertension and other health conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol.

Maintaining a healthy weight is also important. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing hypertension and other health conditions. Aim to keep your BMI <25, waist measurement <40 inches (for men) or <35 inches (for women). This can be achieved by practising a healthy lifestyle.

Next, quit smoking. Smoking can damage blood vessel walls and speed up formation of plaques in artery walls. You can use nicotine patches or take up hobbies to help you quit.
Lastly, limit alcohol intake and learn to cope with stress.
