Hi there,
I have a recurrence of chlamydia, i still have the doxycline but i’m looking at getting the azithromycin as i don’t have any left.

Hi, thank you for the question. It is not recommended to start on the new antibiotics. Before taking the antibiotics, doctor need to evaluate your condition and look for any possible complications, such as pelvic inflammatory diseases. Although you have been treated with doxycycline, changing a new antibiotic for recurrent infection may cause antibiotic resistance.
Doxycycline or azithromycin is the mainstay treatment for chlamydia infection without any complications. It is normally given for a duration of 7 days. During these 7 days, you are recommended not to have any sexual intercourse. If the symptoms or conditions do not improve, please find back your doctor. Although the medication cures the person, they can have re-infection as applicable in your case. Having sexual intercourse with infected partners can cause you to be re-infected. Therefore, you have to practise safe sex using condom.
A recurrence of chlamydia infections must be treated because it can cause serious complications. Doctor will need to redo a chlamydia testing to confirm the chlamydia infection. It is important to get the correct diagnosis before changing or taking new antibiotics. In some cases, other infections can have similar symptoms as chlamydia infections. They are treated with other types of antibiotics. Doctor will most likely prescribe a course of azithromycin for you if there is uncomplicated chlamydia infections.
Continuous treatment of chlamydia infections can cure the infections but cannot reverse the damages done from the disease. It is important to practise safe sex, protecting yourself from future sexual transmitted diseases. Safe sex does not only includes having protected sex using condom, you are encouraged to have one sexual partner. It is your partner’s responsibility to ensure their own sexual health. Have a good day.
