2 & ½ yrs post op surgery on fracture foot and swollen on right salivary gland

Hi,

I am facing 2 health issues for quite long time, and looking forward to obtain opinion on them.

  1. In Oct 2016, i have sprained my left foot and experience fracture at the base of fifth metatarsal bone. Surgery with internal fixation and bone grafting was performed on Feb 2017. Since then, numbness at the edge of left foot experience, swollen and pain as well. In Nov 2017, removal on the screw and tendon repair was done. Since then, numbness along the edge of left foot improved as time goes by. However, swollen and pain still experiencing on and off even until today.

  2. For around 5 years, my right salivary gland will swollen after eating. It’s been around 3-4 times in a year. Highest recorded is about 7 times in a year. It’s always on and off and the swell will went off completely after recovering. 4 years back has done a head CT and ultrasound. The lymph node over that area is at 1.2cm. Screening report written suspected for lymphoma and was advised to operate and get the sample for testing. Upon seeking advice from other doctors, most probably not cancer and therefore does not proceed with the operation. However, in Sept 2019, it swells again but for this time, the swell does not went off completely. Until now, swelling still can be seen and feel upon touching. Pain does not associated with the swelling for this particular 7 months.

Looking forward to the reply and opinion on my health issue.

Thanks and regards.

Thank you for your questions. The following answers regarding your current queries are just general descriptions due to the limited information provided by you. Click on this link (DoctorOnCall) for a private consultation with our doctors.

From your complaints, the swelling following surgery normally resolves after 6 to 8 weeks. In your case, since the swelling persist for years and lead to intermittent pain, i would advice you to visit the surgeon in charge. This is especially important if it has been bothering your daily activities. The reason to persistent swelling could be due to the location of the surgery is at the most end of your extremity. It may lead to interrupted drainage of blood from your blood vessels around the surgical area leading to swelling. Normally the swelling does not result in pain. But if it does, you need to revisit your surgeon.

As for your swelling salivary gland, it may be due to multiple factors.

  • blockage of salivary duct from stones
  • infection of salivary gland
  • mumps
  • tumour of the salivary gland

Nevertheless, we need to further confirm if the swelling is originated from your salivary gland or the neighbouring structures. This is very important as the diagnoses will be different.

In order for us to provide you with an accurate choice of treatment and management, we need additional details and physical examinations to explore further into your current complaints. Therefore, we greatly suggest that you refer this to your nearest medical doctor. You may also click on this link (DoctorOnCall) to speak with our doctors online. We assure you that our conversations are kept in confidentiality unless additional consultation needed with other medical parties. Thank you.
