I’m 39 years old (lady). Recently ate my lunch late (i guess wind in stomach) which caused me vomiting at night (only 1 time) and the next day when I cough, my right side (back part) ribs very painful. May I know is there anything serious about my condition now? Do I need to refer to my panel doctor immediately?

Greetings! Thank you for your question.

Due to the limited information given by you, I can only provide you with common causes of back rib pain.

  • Muscle pull due to sudden coughing- this is very common and not serious unless the pain does not go away. Muscle spasm of your rib cage muscles or muscles surrounding the ribs can happen when you suddenly cough or sneeze as a protective reflex.
  • Swollen rib cartilage- can occur after intense workout
  • Injury to the ribs- after trauma to the chest or the back part, you may feel rib pain.
  • Inflammation of the lining of the lungs
  • Liver problems-Liver is situated on the right side of your abdomen. Hence, the pain form liver inflammation can be felt on the right side.
  • Gall bladder problems- Gall bladder is behind the liver. Hence, and conditions related to the gallbladder that causes pain may be felt at the right side. This includes inflamed or infected gall bladder.

Take care of your joints and bone now!

I would advise you to monitor for any progression of this rib pain. Otherwise, this might not be a serious condition if it occurs once without other symptoms to back up a more concerning diagnosis. However, you may get online consultations with our doctors here for medical advice and treatments. We assure you that our conversations are kept in confidentiality unless additional consultation needed with other medical parties. Thank you.
