Should i do swab test or not?

Im girl, 22y/o and fulltime student. Lately,i experience dry cough, sore throat, itchy throat, lost of breath especially at night even i just walking around in the house. Fyi, i didnt travel anywhere since october but i always going out to the public places almost everyday to study. Currently, the place that i live have several cases of covid 19 but as far as i know i dont have any close contact with them. So, i want your opinion regarding the symtom that i told you earlier, is that a covid syptom or its just a regular symptom? And also should i do swab test? If i should can i get the test from government clinic instead of swasta because it very costly. But if i should do at swasta clinic then i will do it. Thankyou in advance.

Greetings!

Thank you for your question. For your information, a blocked nose or flu can affect your sense of smell. This is because the mucus blocks your smell receptors. Hence, you may have difficulty in smelling and even tasting as your sense of smell is related to your sense of taste. According to WHO, the common symptoms of COVID-19 infection are:

  • Fever (more than 37.5 degrees celcius)
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Aches and pains
  • Sorethroat
  • Headaches
  • Shortness of breath

It is difficult to identify if you have COVID-19 through symptoms alone. I would also encourage you to answer this quiz on Risk Assessment for COVID-19 to evaluate their health status in regards to this disease. After completing this quiz, you will be classified into several categories. Further instructions will be given at the end of the quiz. Please act accordingly.

But if you want to seek a second opinion, you may try to contact the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC). Other than that, do practice good hand hygiene and normalize wearing face mask in public.

Other than COVID-19 infection, your problem might be due to:

  • Common cold/flu
  • Bacterial infection of throat and tonsils
  • Allergies
  • Dry air
  • Dehydration - drinking less water
  • Acid reflux - due to GERD

Boost your immune system with a balanced diet and good nutrition.
