Vaginal discharge is smelly but period is coming

I’m 21 years old female. I planned to see clinic doctor on Monday because my vaginal discharge is smelly, but today i can feel that my period is almost coming. Is it suitable to see doctor when period is coming? If the doctor want to collect some sample of vaginal discharge, does the doctor still can collect it when period is coming? Will the period make my problem more serious (if my problem is due to kind of infection)?
