Can hypertension be totally cured or do one have to take medicine the whole life

Good morning doctor, can hypertension be totally cured or do one have to take medicine the whole life?

Hi, thank you for your question.
There are some cases of hypertension that are caused by other medical condtions, such as kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and so on. Your doctor may order some tests to check whether you have any of these conditions, if your blood pressure is exceptionally high or medications fail to keep your blood pressure under control.

If these conditions can be treated, then your blood pressure may return to normal and you can say it is totally cured.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for most people with hypertension. They need to make lifestyle changes or take medications to lower their blood pressure. If you do not wish to take hypertensive medications, your doctor will adivce you on lifestlye changes as a first line of treatment and recheck your blood pressure after a period of time.

Lifestyle changes can help control hypertension. First of all, eat a healthy diet. Consume a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, lean meat, fish and low-fat dairy products. Eat a low-salt diet. Reduce intake of food high in trans fat and saturated fat, like full-fat dairy product, red meat, bakery products, margerine and deep-fried food.

Also, you should exercise regularly. Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week or do vigorous aerobic exercises 20 minutes 3 times a week. Maintaining a healthy weight is also important. Try to keep your BMI <25, waist measurement <40 inches (for men) or <35 inches (for women). This can be achieved by practising a healthy lifestyle.

Next, quit smoking. Lastly, limit alcohol intake and learn to cope with stress using techniques like meditation.
However, if these effort still do not bring down your blood pressure, your doctor will need to start you on hypertensive medications.
