Flu, rash, cold, umresponsive and headache

My friend (19 years old) having a flu, cold, headache, unresponsive, having rash. Then she was sent to a emergency room and get lumbar puncture. All of the dormity need to get a meningococcal vaccine. What diseases actually she having and why the rest need to get vaccinated? Bukan kita pernah ada vaccine tu ka?

Greetings! Thank you for your enquiry.

I understand you are curious about your friend’s condition. However, it is best to ask your friend’s attending doctor for the real diagnosis as I have not enough information on your friend’s condition. However, the indications for meningococcal vaccine are as follows:

  • Having certain medical conditions
  • Taking specific medications
  • Travel
  • Profession like healthcare professionals
  • A meningococcal disease outbreak

Based on your brief explanation, this may be a case of menigococcal meningitis. The symptoms may come on quickly. Many infected people (5-10%) become asymptomatic carriers of the bacteria and serve as a reservoir and source of infection for others.

Meningococcal meningitis has a sudden onset of intense headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, photophobia and stiff neck, plus various neurological signs.

The disease is fatal in 5-10% of cases even with prompt antimicrobial treatment. This vaccine is not our routine vaccine in Malaysia. However, it is available in clinics.
