I have bad headaches since the past few weeks

Doctor, I have bad headaches since the past few weeks. I am also hypertensive. I take my meds regularly, but can this headache happened because of my hypertension?

Hi, thank you for your question. There are research that says that headache is not one of the symptoms of hypertension. However, you may experience headache if your blood pressure is so high that you develop a condition called malignant hypertension or hypertensive crisis.

This usually happens when your blood pressure exceeds 180/120 mmHg.
During a hypertensive crisis, the sudden rise in your blood pressure causes the pressure in your skull to increase and lead to a headache. This type of headache does not resemble migraine or the typical headache you experience at times of stress.

A research claims that headaches caused by hypertension usually lead to pain on both sides of your head and they tend to pulsate. Taking normal painkillers also do not help to alleviate the pain.

Other than headache, you may experience other symptoms such as nausea, blurred vision, confusion, dizziness and seizures during a hypertensive crisis. This type of headache goes away after their blood pressure comes down.

Taking your medications regularly does not mean that your hypertension is kept under control. The medications you are currently taking may not be effective for you and you may need to change medications or increase your dose.

If you think that your headache may be due to malignant hypertension, seek medical attention immediately because you are at risk of developing other problems like organ damage. It is important to find out the cause of your headache if you have been having frequent bad headaches.

You may wish to consult your doctor and get his advice on this matter. Your doctor will take a detailed medical history and order some tests to help you find out the cause of your headache.
