13 yr old girl has been experiencing tremblling hands for over a week

hi…my 13 yr old girl has been experiencing tremblling hands for over a week.
She did a blood test for thyroid but the results are only due in 6 weeks. Is there anything I can do in the mean time to stop the trembling?

Hi, thank you for your question. Hand tremors due to hyperthyroidism can resolve with treatment of the condition itself. Hand tremors can make activities of daily living a challenge. In the mean time, here are a few ways that may help to reduce or relieve hand tremors.

First of all, avoid food that may induce hand tremors such as caffeine. Also, avoid food with high iodine content. Some people with hyperthyroidism are more sensitive to iodine and eating food with high iodine content, such as seaweed, seafood, dairy products, iodised salt, cough syrup and multivitamins, can worsen their condition.

You should talk to your doctor about which type of food your daughter should avoid. Other than that, she should eat a healthy diet which is low in fat, calorie, salt and sugar.
Besides, anxiety, fatigue and stress can worsen her hand tremors. She can learn how to relax and manage her stress through a series of relaxation techniques, for example:

  • meditation
  • yoga
  • massage

Regular exercise can help make your daughter feel better in general and it will be beneficial for her health in the long run. She should begin with lower intensity exercises, such as:

  • yoga
  • walking
  • tai chi

Higher intensity exercises are not recommended at this stage since her metabolic rate and heart rate are already quite high even at rest. It may do more harm than good.
Your doctor may also suggest going for physical or occupational therapy. Physical therapy will help to improve muscle strength, coordination and control.

Meanwhile, occupational therapy may help your daughter cope with activities of daily living, possibly with the help of adaptive devices, such as heavier utensils, cups and stationeries to reduce the effect of tremors.
