Gastritis or dyspepsia in a 17 year old mildly autistic girl

Greetings, Doctor. My daughter is 17, has mild autism. For the past few months, she has developed excessive gas and flatulence. There is a lot of belching, sometimes at night, sometimes throughout the day. Have been to a GP and was put on Moridone 10mg and Conpanzole 40mg.Is it necessary to do an endoscope to probe further on the causes of her dyspepsia? She does not appear to be in pain and can usually do her normal activities but complains of fullness in her belly and generally, her appetite is lower than before. Recent change in habits include: Waking up late and sleeping very late. Missing breakfast. I’m trying to help her return to her previous meal schedules. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello, thank you for contacting us.

We understand your concern regarding your daughter’s condition. The symptoms might cause discomfort to her and this causes some changes in her behavior. There are few causes that might explain her symptoms, such as:

  • Gastritis
  • Dyspepsia
  • GERD
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease

Avoid the nuisance stomach problems with the right care for your digestive system.

However, this is is only our general impression why she is having such symptoms and further evaluation is needed to find out the cause. The need to do endoscope is depending on the doctor’s impression on diagnosis on your daughter. She may need or may not need it.

Talk to a gastroenterologist to address your stomach problems and get their expert opinion.

You may try this method to restore her activities:

  • Giving her small portion of meal but frequent
  • Make food that she loves to eat
  • Give some stimulation so that she can wake up early
