Hi Doc, I was just reading about Bulbonic Plague yesterday and couldn’t help but to wonder if it can be catastrophic just like the coronavirus that has turned into a full blown pandemic? I am very grateful if you could explain about the plague. Thanks in advance

Greetings. Thank you for your questions.

Bubonic plague is often associated with the Black Death and is the worst pandemic in human history. It originated in southwest Asia and spread to Europe in the early 1340s. The worldwide death toll from this pandemic is estimated at 75 to 200 million people. The disease is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. on the seventh day after a person has been infected with this bacteria, the patient will show the following symptoms:

  • Runny nose

  • Headache

  • Vomit

  • Fever

  • Swelling of lymph nodes

  • Seizure

The disease is still present even though it is very rare and according to the International Center for Disease Control, there are on average 7 cases a year.

Would it emerge again? That’s is actually a great question. Although the plague trains today were just as deadly as the strains from the past but we, the humans have changed. These strains are always emerging from rodent reservoirs, so, we have reduced rat populations and the public health response are quick and very concentrated to shut that down. On top of that now we have antibiotics that can be used to treat human outbreaks before they start to spread on a large scale.

The following answers regarding your current queries are just general answer but I hope you are able gain something from it.
