Headache that occurs once in awhile but hurts for a long time

Hi, im having headache at the right side sometimes and it hurts for quite a long time. It will take few days to recover. This happens once in a year. What am I supposed to do dr?

Thank you for your question.

From your description, it is still difficult to tell what sort of headache you are having. The more common types of headache that often plague our people are tension type headache, migraines and cluster headache. A detailed history of your headache may help in diagnosing which type of headache you are having, because different types of headaches require different approaches in treatment.

Other important features of your headache that you need to mention are when you started having these headaches, the typical or average duration of your headache, the nature of the pain that you are having, any medication you are taking to help, and various other questions your doctor may want to clarify. It also helps to have a headache diary to document your headaches, and also other habits, to identify patterns and triggers that may be related to your headache.

Treatment options (depending on the final diagnosis) include preventive measures as well as medication to abort an impending or ongoing headache. Different people respond may respond differently to the drugs that are prescribed, therefore do not be discouraged if a drug does not work for you. Always discuss with your doctor about the available options and progress.
