Is perindopril safe for breastfeeding?

Hi, I’m currently having proteinuria and hematuria due to strong family history of alport syndrome. Me and my sister are taking the same medicine, perindopril. While her doctor said perindopril is safe for breastfeeding, mine said not suggested. So, I’m a bit confused whether this med is really breastfeeding safe or not. My son is now 10months old.

Hi and thank you for your question.

We truly understand your concern regarding the correlation between perindopril and breastfeeding. We will try to help you.

For your information, some studies have indicated that only low levels of perindopril and its active metabolite are found in women’s breastmilk, which is consistent with other drugs in this class (ACE inhibitors). It was also found that the amounts ingested by the infant are small and would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants.

However, as there are differing opinions with regard to the usage of this drug in nursing women, it is best that you seek further advice from your doctor.

You are also encouraged to talk to our doctor online, so that we can help you further.

We hope you will be satisfied with our answer.
