Neck pain and couldn’t sleep comfortably every night for one month plus

My son aged 16, one month ago, he feel uncomfortable on the back of his neck while sleeping . Then he feel pain after woke up in the next morning. It’s right at his back neck, where joint connection to the shoulder. He feel pain only when he bent backward on his neck. already one month plus, still can feel this pain when he try bend his neck. EVery night couldn’t sleep comfortable even try to change pillow or sleep withtou pillow. What could have go wrong here and how to treat this problem?
